Southern Slaw Dogs Recipe

This is a delicious and fun way to eat a hot dog. I’m sharing with you today a Southern Slaw Dogs Recipe. There’s no going back to just mustard on your hotdog after trying a slaw dog. Enjoy!

From what I have read about a Slaw Dog, it originated in the late 20s in the state of West Virginia.

Legend has it that the Slaw Dog was first served as a plain hot dog on a bun with seasoned shredded cabbage on top, then drizzled with a good amount of yellow mustard.

Originally served at a diner near Charleston, West Virginia.

This was during the Great Depression when hot dogs and cabbage were two of the most plentiful and affordable food items around. These Slaw Dogs were so popular that they stuck around all these year later.

A popular variation is to add chili on top of the hot dog, then add the coleslaw and mustard.

Another version is the one I’m sharing with you all today.

I actually had a Slaw Dog two times when I lived in Atlanta many years ago.

The first time was at one of Atlanta’s most favorite and oldest restaurant, which happens to be the largest drive-in fast food restaurant in the world! Taking up two of Atlanta’s city streets.

It’s called “The Varsity” They are known for their famous Slaw Dogs too.

The second time was at a friends house in Marietta Georgia. She first boiled the hot dogs then put them on the outdoor grill. (Mine are made on an indoor grill pan)Topped with barbeque sauce, yellow mustard and coleslaw. If you like that idea, you are going to love my Southern Slaw Dogs Recipe below. You will love the two choices of coleslaw I use in this recipe. Get ready for the most delicious hot dog experience.

Southern Slaw Dogs Recipe

Recipe yields: 4 servings, easily doubled or tripled for larger crowds

What’s Needed To Make A Southern Slaw Dog

Ingredients:

  • 4 hot dogs of choice, I used all beef hot dogs
  • 4 hot dog buns, split
  • 1 1/2 cups coleslaw. This is one of my favorite recipes that’s a Copycat KFC Coleslaw (Click the link for the easy and delicious recipe)
  • 4 tablespoons favorite BBQ sauce, I like one that’s made with honey
  • 4 teaspoons yellow mustard, you could use another kind of mustard but, yellow is the traditional way for this recipe

How To Make This Southern Slaw Dogs Recipe

Directions:

  1. Grill hot dogs on an indoor grill pan or an outdoor barbeque grill. Cook until you have a some charred grill marks.
  2. You have the option of grilling the inside of the buns or not. If you grill them, open the slit up and place on grill for just a minute to warm up and to give a little grill mark on each bun.
  3. Place each grilled hot dog and put into each bun.
  4. Squeeze out the yellow mustard onto each hot dog. Then, pour a tablespoon of BBQ sauce over the mustard. You can use more or less of each condiment to your taste. Now, top each hot dog with the star of the show, your favorite coleslaw. Here is another one of my favorite coleslaw recipes that’s a copycat of Chick-Fil-A Coleslaw. (Click the link for recipe) It’s also so easy and simple to make.

Enjoy the deliciousness!
