Copycat KFC Coleslaw

This copycat KFC coleslaw is pretty close to the original. Try this easy recipe and taste for yourself. It’s totally delicious!

Do you agree with me? I think coleslaw goes with just about any meal. It’s the perfect side dish whether you’re eating a hot meal like roast beef or a cold tuna sandwich.

Coleslaw complements any meal in my opinion.

We have a few great coleslaw recipes already up on the blog. However,  my favorite still and has always been from KFC.

My mission was to try and copy the original famous KFC coleslaw recipe. I must admit, it took a few tries until it tasted pretty close.

Then, it was my family who had to give me the green light on putting the recipe on the blog.

Well, I think it’s a big success. My whole family loved this copycat version.

It was hard for them to tell which was which.

I think one secret is to chop the cabbage just the way they do at KFC.

Since it’s such a huge hit, I’m going to make this again to bring to our friends for a barbecue.

Try this simple recipe out. See and taste for yourself. It’s pretty close indeed!

Looking for another KFC copycat recipe? Check this one out, another easy-peasy recipe that seriously takes no time at all to prepare and tastes just like the mashed potatoes you get at your favorite KFC.   Copycat KFC Mashed Potatoes

Recipe note: I have made this copycat KFC coleslaw recipe so many times over the years that I can’t keep count.

You may notice that the photo on the top of the page is a little different from the other photos.

That’s because that photo was from the very first time I made the recipe and it was probably way back in 2013.

I have no idea what camera I would have used.

So, the photos may be off just a bit.

Also, I chopped up the coleslaw a little more for the other photos. Maybe I was lazy the first time.

All I know, it’s the same exact recipe in all the photos just different cameras and times of day that I took the photos.

Natural lighting is completely different from studio lighting.

One more thing, this copycat KFC coleslaw  recipe happens to be an inexpensive one. Great to double and triple the recipe for a larger crowd.

Copycat KFC Coleslaw

Yields: 10-12 side dish servings

This copycat KFC coleslaw has basic ingredients that come together just like the original

Here’s the ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup mayo
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup milk, I used 2 percent
  • 1/3 cup superfine sugar (castor) or granulated sugar
  • 2 1/2 -3 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 tbsp white vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp Kosher or sea salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground pepper
  • 1/4 tsp celery seed, optional
  • About 8 cups cabbage, finely chopped. I bought bags of already shredded cabbage then chopped up. Or, one large head cabbage.
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped carrots, again, I bought a small bag coarsely chopped carrots then chopped. Or one large carrot, grated, chopped.
  • 1 1/2 – 2 tbsp minced white or yellow onion

Easy to find in the produce section, just chop up some more for the perfect texture like the original.

Same with the carrots, found right next to the bags of coleslaw mix. Easy recipe, that’s for sure.

Three simple steps and you have a delicious copycat KFC coleslaw

Here’s the simple directions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine mayo and all other ingredients up to cabbage. (Do not add cabbage) Use a whisk to mix. Dressing should be completely combined and creamy.
  2. Add chopped cabbage, carrots and onions to the dressing. Gently fold all together until all the cabbage is coated.
  3. Cover with plastic wrap or put into a sealed container in fridge for 4 hours or overnight. When you take out, gently mix again.

ENJOY this great copycat recipe right in your own home!
