Copycat DQ Cotton Candy Blizzard
This colorful copycat DQ cotton candy blizzard is almost too pretty to devour! But, you won’t be able to stop yourself from digging into one of these thick and creamy treats.
The special cool treat I’m sharing with you today is a Copycat DQ Cotton Candy Blizzard.
I guess you could call it a very thick milkshake.
In fact, it’s so thick that when it’s served in a Dairy Queen restaurant the server often turns the shake upside down before handing it over to the customer to show how thick it really is.
What is a DQ Blizzard?
DQ is the abbreviation for Dairy Queen, a national chain of soft serve ice cream and fast food restaurants.
Their famous “Blizzard” was introduced in 1985—a year in which Dairy Queen sold more than 100 million blizzards!
Since then, the blizzard has been a staple on their menu with new flavors popping up all the time.
Not everyone knows that you start out eating a Blizzard one way and finishing a Blizzard is done in a whole different way.
Because a Blizzard is so thick, you start by eating a blizzard with a spoon, then as you continue eating, the Blizzard thins out just enough for a thick straw to let you finish drinking your Blizzard.
Another fun fact that makes this drink I’m sharing with you today so special is the cotton candy flavor only comes out in the late spring and summer months.
A few years ago, Dairy Queen decided not to bring this flavor back and it’s not certain why.
So, if it’s on the menu a certain year, by the end of August it’s gone until they decide if they will bring it back again the following spring or summer.
Now you have the recipe right here and can enjoy this luscious treat anytime of year. Because who says ice cream treats are only to be enjoyed during the spring and summer months?
Ice cream in any form is a year round treat in my house.
However, we love this cotton candy Blizzard for birthday parties and around Easter, because of the pastel colors.
Use any color cotton candy you like, but the most common colors are pink and light blue.
Sometimes I find lavender and yellow. For this recipe I used pink, as you can see in the photos.
And, I saved the best for last…
Guess what? You too will be able to turn your blizzard upside down before digging into it. Yup, this copycat recipe really is pretty close to the original. Taste, thickness, and even looks a lot like the cotton candy Blizzard they served my son this past May at our local Dairy Queen.
Thanks to that Blizzard, I was able to figure out a yummy copycat recipe for everyone to enjoy anytime.
This recipe will take you under 10 minutes to make. That’s it!
Have fun making these with the kiddos.
