You can put together this refreshingly sweet copycat New York diner cantaloupe in less than five minutes. Great for breakfast, lunch, or a healthy and delicious snack, you name it.
See my two different ways to make this anytime recipe. Or, you pick your toppings and filling. It’s the most versatile recipe. The sky’s the limit…
I grew up in New York. Living on Long Island, New York City, or any surrounding areas, there’s going to be a diner or two, or three right in your neighborhood.
It seems like there’s one on every corner. I’m not even joking!
A few years ago, when I would go to one of the many diners for breakfast or lunch, even after a nighttime movie, when everyone else is ordering a stack of pancakes, I would order my usual. A half cantaloup filled with either cottage cheese or plain Greek yogurt. Then, I’d get to pick out whatever toppings if any, I want.
Nowadays, I don’t order this at the diners anymore. The reason, they charge a fortune!
I can buy my own cantaloup and make one right at home.
Since I always have cottage cheese and yogurt in my fridge along with fresh berries and all different kids of nuts, this is my go-to breakfast, lunch, or healthy snack during the day.
It’s loaded with fiber and protein. And, it’s so yummy!
Today, I’m showing you two of my favorite ways to eat a half cantaloupe. You don’t need a diner near you to enjoy this healthy treat. Make one at home. It’s the easiest throw together recipe.
The best part about these two recipes, you can make at home in less than 5 minutes…
Since the recipes are so versatile, add in your favorite kind of yogurt, I happen to like plain Greek yogurt. Vanilla and strawberry Greek yogurt also tastes really good inside a half cantaloupe. Any kind of berry works and plain or toasted coconut is a nice addition too. For the cottage cheese version, I used 2 %. Any cottage cheese of choice will work. Even pineapple cottage cheese tastes really good.
Looking for a dessert option?
Try adding some flavored jello inside and then a dollop of whipped cream on top. I like sugar free strawberry the best but, any flavor with or without sugar will be delish. One more suggestion for a dessert option, rice pudding. It may sound strange but, it was so good.
I hope you all try this easy-peasy way to enjoy cantaloupe. It’s a winner in my book.

What you’ll need to make a filled copycat New York Diner cantaloupe…
Ingredients: With Greek yogurt or Cottage cheese
- 1/2 medium cantaloupe (save the other half for the next day)
- 1/2 to 3/4 cup Greek yogurt, I use plain, any flavor will be delicious or, about 1/2 to 3/4 cup cottage cheese, I used 2 %
- 1/2 cup fresh or frozen blueberries, if frozen, let thaw out just a bit and drain off the liquid or 1/4 cup fresh or frozen blueberries
- optional, nuts of choice
- optional a dollop of whipped cream or more yogurt on top or a drizzle of honey
Directions:
- Rinse the outside of the melon with cool water. Pat dry.
- Cut the melon in half and wrap one half with plastic wrap and store in fridge until you’re ready to use. Keeps in fridge, wrapped tightly up to 2 days.
- Cut a very small slice on the bottom of your cantaloupe slice so that it doesn’t roll around. See in photo above.
- Scoop out all the cantaloupe seeds and discard.
- Fill with Greek yogurt or cottage cheese, smooth out.
- Add the berries on top. Toss on some nuts of choice. I added sliced almonds that came toasted for the yogurt and walnuts for the cottage cheese. Then, I drizzled honey over the one with cottage cheese and added a dollop of whipped cream over the one with the Greek yogurt. That’s it! Enjoy this refreshing treat either way.
