I have a major sweet tooth, and treats like these Snickers dates and my chocolate-covered blueberry yogurt clusters are always on my list of treats to make for family and friends. Really, anything covered with chocolate is a winner!
Why You’ll Love These Chocolate Covered Dates
- Simple Ingredients: These dates use a handful of simple ingredients you can find at any grocery store.
- Easy to Make: It only takes a few minutes to make these delicious dates.
- Better-for-You: These taste very similar to a Snickers bar without all the added bad stuff!
- A Great Snack: These are perfect for a quick bite in the afternoon or dessert.
Ingredients
- Dates: The sweetness of dates is perfect with the peanut butter and chocolate, and their texture makes them feel like fun-size Snickers Bars.
- Peanut Butter and Peanuts: Peanut butter and chopped peanuts give these chocolate covered dates their nutty Snickers flavor.
- Chocolate: Milk chocolate is the classic Snickers coating, you can certainly use semisweet chocolate chips if you want to. I actually did both for these photos. But, my family and I love these made with the traditional milk chocolate. You can even use sugar free chocolate chips.
See the recipe card at the end of the post for a full list of ingredients and their exact amounts.
Flavor Variations
- Nut Butter: Use your favorite nut butter in this recipe to create different flavors.
- Nuts: If you use a different nut butter, add its corresponding chopped nuts.
- Chocolate: Milk chocolate is the classic Snickers chocolate, but you can change things up with dark or semi-sweet chocolate, or even white chocolate.
How to Make Chocolate Covered Snickers Dates
1. Prepping the dates to be filled: Cut the dates in half and remove the pits. (Important tip) When finished removing all the dates. Leave them lined up and then count each pit and then each cut date. Make sure you have the same amount. (No one wants a pit left in a date) Then, throw the pits away.
2. Filling each date with peanut butter: Fill the center of the dates with peanut butter. Using a teaspoon or butter knife, fill each date with about 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of peanut butter. Or, you can put the peanut butter into a Ziplock bag, push all the way down to one corner and make a slit. Then, fill each date. Whatever is easier for you.
3. Adding the chopped peanuts: Grab a teaspoon or so of the chopped peanuts and press against the peanut butter to secure the peanuts in each date. Now, close each date up by squeezing each side together. Don’t worry if some of the peanut butter or peanuts fall out.
4. Melting the chocolate chips: In a microwave safe bowl. Melt the chocolate chips of choice and coconut oil together for 20 second intervals. Take out, stir and put back into the microwave for another 20 seconds. Do this until the chocolate is smooth. Mix until the chocolate is shiny.
6. Dipping the dates: Grab one date at a time and with a fork, dip each filled date into the melted chocolate. Move around to completely coat the whole date. Use the fork to let excess chocolate drip off.
7. Chill the dates to set up: After each coating, using the fork to gently place on a parchment lined rimmed cookie sheet or cutting board. After you finish dipping the dates in chocolate, place in freezer for ten minutes to completely set up.
8. Plate up: Take out of the freezer and enjoy these delicious “Snickers”!!
Storage
Refrigerate these Snickers dates for up to 5 days in an air-tight container. For longer storage, freeze them for up to 1 month in an air-tight, freezer-safe container or heavy-duty freezer bag with as much air removed as possible. Defrost in the refrigerator overnight.
What to Serve with Dates Covered with Chocolate
If you like a little dessert for breakfast, try pairing these Snickers dates with my copycat Starbucks egg bites or bagel breakfast casserole. The ingredients are actually perfect for breakfast or brunch.
Their chocolatey, peanut butter flavor also makes them the perfect dessert after a simple meal of crockpot goulash or meatloaf.
Of course, chocolate, peanut butter, and fruit work well together, so try these chocolate-covered dates with fresh fruit salad or my fruity frozen yogurt bites.
Tips
- Spread each date half a little to make the center easier to fill.
- To easily fill the dates, add the peanut butter to a Ziploc bag and clip off one corner to pipe the peanut butter into the dates.
- Freeze the dates for about 10 minutes to quickly set the chocolate.
- Place your pits in a row as you remove them. Then, make sure the pits match the dates to ensure you don’t lose track of your pits. Then, throw the pits away.

These chocolate covered dates are a healthy alternative to a Snickers candy bar for sure. They’re made with dates that are stuffed with peanut butter and chopped peanuts, then covered in melted chocolate. I think these are far better for you than Snickers bars. Even though I must admit, I still love Snickers Bars.

Ingredients
- 10 large Medjool dates, pits removed
- 3 tablespoons peanut butter, use any nut butter or seed butter of choice. Salted or unsalted I used unsweetened
- 1/4 chopped or halved salted or unsalted dry roasted peanuts
- 3/4 - 1 cup semisweet or milk chocolate chips milk chocolate will taste more like a traditional Snickers Bar
- 1 teaspoon solid refined coconut oil refined has no coconut flavor
Instructions
-
1. Cut each date in half and remove the pits. Spread each date a little to make it easier to fill. (Good tip, when you remove the pits, put them in a row and when done removing all the pits from the dates you are using, make sure the amount of pits is the same as the amount of prepared dates.)
2. Add a little over a 1/2 teaspoon of peanut butter in each date. (Either spoon in with a teaspoon or place peanut butter in a Ziploc bag, push all the way down to one corner, cut a small slit and fill the date that way.) Top with some chopped or halved peanuts. Close the dates to keep the peanut butter and chopped peanuts inside. Set aside on a parchment lined plate or small rimmed cookie sheet. Set aside while melting the chocolate chips.
3. In a microwave safe bowl, add the chocolate chips of choice along with the teaspoon of solid coconut oil. Microwave for about 20 seconds. Take out, stir and put back in the microwave for 15 seconds. Take out, stir again. Do this another one or two times until the chocolate is smooth and shiny.
4. Using a fork, dip each filled date into the melted chocolate until completely coated. Use the fork to let the extra chocolate to drip off back into the bowl. Set each date onto a rimmed cookie sheet or cutting board. When all finished, place plate or cookie sheet into the freezer for just 10 minutes or until set. When set, you can store the dates in a sealed container in fridge up to 5 days. Enjoy!
