What is frothing?
“Frothing” is the term used for creating bubbles in milk. Traditionally, this is done by blowing air or steam through the milk.
Depending on the type of milk you use will determine the amount of froth you’ll get. It’s possible to froth any kind of milk but soy milk will be the most difficult. Most people recommend 2% milk for drinks using frothed or steamed milk but really it’s up to you. The fat content in the milk will change the taste so adjust to your taste buds. Whole milk will have the creamiest flavor and skim milk will have the wateriest flavor.
Wait, so you can steam milk without a steamer?
Yes you can! You don’t need a steamer to make steamed, foamed or frothed milk. There are a few ways to do this but today I’ll outline my three-step, one-minute method for steaming milk in the microwave without any special tools, but you can mimic the steamer method in a few different ways.
With a French press: you can froth the milk by hand with a French press by pouring your heated milk into the French press, about a quarter full, and then pumping the plunger up and down quickly to create those frothy air bubbles.
Use a balloon whisk: Start by heating up milk in a saucepan on the stove over low-medium heat. As it warms, beat it quickly with a balloon whisk. You can also use a hand mixer but note that it will be easy to spray milk everywhere so use caution!
Use a milk frother: This is kind of tool that ranges in price from inexpensive to luxury.
Can you froth cold milk?
You can! It’s a little different from warm frothed milk but if you’re going for an iced latte or cold foam this is how it’s done.
With a blender: This is a quick and easy method. Pour your milk into the blender and blend for between 15 and 30 seconds.
Using a hand-held frother: With this method, add a few ounces of milk to a glass or Mason jar and submerge the wand in milk. Froth it until your milk reaches desired frothiness.
With an electric frothing machine: Some electric frothing machines have cold-frothing settings and if you have one of those babies, then frothing cold milk is as simple as pushing a button!
What’s the difference between steamed milk and frothed milk?
Steamed milk and frothed milk are really quite similar. The main difference is frothed milk has more air bubbles than steamed milk. When you froth milk in the microwave you’re adding all those microbubbles that make lattes and cappuccinos so amazing.
