Mummy Hot Dog Recipe
This mummy hot dog recipe is a favorite for kids and adults. It’s a basic Halloween recipe that requires only two main ingredients plus some candy googly eyes and mustard or ketchup to hold them in place. They still look like a mummy without any candy eyes. Defiantly fun to make with the kiddos and really delicious too.
When you bite into one of these yummy mummy dogs, it will remind you of a “pigs in blanket” that most of us have had. However these just come out looking so cool.
Mummy Dogs have been a favorite with both my kids since they were little.
My daughter Tori is now 26 and an attorney and my son Josh is 15 and in high school. (Time moves so fast when you have kids)
Anyway, they both always loved these from the first time I made this recipe for them when they were really little.
I started making these when Tori was 3 years old. By the time she was 4, she asked me if she could help me make them.
We had so much fun that it became a tradition every year to make this recipe right around Halloween. Always the week of or on Halloween night right before they headed out to go trick or treating. The crazy mom that I am, I serve sautéed carrot coins just so I know they would get a veggie in the meal.
When Josh came along, he started eating these at 2 years old. But, at the time I made them with turkey hot dogs.
Actually I still do and no one really can tell the difference since they are wrapped in a strip of a crispy crescent roll.
For my vegetarian and vegan friends, you can easily make these mummy dogs with any vegan or vegetarian hot dog. That how I make them for me since I’m a vegetarian. By the way, most brands of crescent rolls are vegan. So, anyone can enjoy these delicious mummy dogs.
I will post more recipes made with crescent rolls below. We love anything that has to do with crescent rolls. Both sweet and savory like this recipe.
A few times, I have made these as an appetizer for our friends right around Halloween. Either I bring them wrapped and ready to bake once we arrive to one of our friend’s houses or when I have them here at our house, they are expected at this point. LOL. Dinner is usually pizza but the appetizers are homemade.
Sometimes I leave off the eyes if I don’t have any in the house. they will still look like a mummy. You can always dot some ketchup or mustard where the eyes would go or even a small black olive that’s been cut in half. Just “glue” them on like you would the googly eyes with the ketchup or mustard.
We also have had a few Halloween parties for both my kids and always served these.
For many years now, Tori has been on her own and she also makes this recipe right around Halloween for her boyfriend and a few friends.
When she was away in college, she was the cook in the bunch. She made delicious recipes for her roommates and also again in law school.
I have a category on the blog called “What a college girl eats” It’s a collection of Tori’s recipes she made while in college and law school. They are all so delicious and very easy to make since most kids in college don’t have that much time to spend in the kitchen.
Nowadays, Josh does a lot of the cooking. He is in a culinary program in his school so he has become a wonderful cook and baker. I will start posting some of his recipes once he gives them to me so I can make some and take photos of the finished dish. The ones I have tried were so good. My favorite were his chocolate chip cookies and egg drop soup.
I hope you try this easy and fun recipe. Happy and safe Halloween to all!
Mummy Hot Dog Recipe
Yields: 6 mummy dogs
Ingredients:
- 6 regular size hot dogs of choice
- 1 tube crescent rolls, any brand will work
- candy eyes of choice, I get mine at craft stores or on on Amazon (these are the ones I used for this recipe)
- ketchup or mustard to “glue” on the candy eyes
How are these mummy dogs made?
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line rimmed cookie sheet with parchment paper then set aside while preparing your mummy dogs.
- Open up the tube of crescent roll and lay flat out. Best on a cutting board. Press the perforations to seal them together.
- Now, cut the dough in 1/4 to 1/2 inches strips.
- Wrap the strips of dough around each hot dog. You can use one or more strips for each hot dog. If you have leftover dough strips, you can make more mummy dogs or save the pieces in an airtight container. Place in freezer for up to 1 month or in the fridge up to 2 days. Use the leftover dough for another recipe. I take a few strips and braid them then baked.
- Try not to cover each hot dog completely. You want to see openings like a wrapped mummy.
- Place each wrapped mummy dog on the parchment lined cookie sheet and bake for 10 12 minutes or until the crescent roll strips are golden brown.
- Using ketchup or mustard, make a dot on the back of each candy eye or eyes and place onto a piece of the baked crescent strip. That’s it! Have fun making these yummy mummy dogs.
