Browned Butter Baked Cranberry Apples

This simple recipe for browned butter baked cranberry apples is a real treat. This is not just any baked apple. The nutty taste of browned butter and brown sugar brings this recipe over the top for an extra ordinary baked apple dessert.

You’ve seen baked apples before, you may have had a baked apple or two in the past. But, I bet you never had browned butter baked cranberry apples before.

This easy recipe has different layers of flavors and textures. It’s a showstopper of a baked apple.

Also, they’re  beyond decadent tasting.

From the first bite, you will know how delicious this is going to be.

Eat this amazing baked apple slowly, your taste buds won’t know what hit them.

While baking, you’ll  fill the whole house with the most wonderful scent.

In fact, some realtors put a baked apple in the oven of a home they are showing  just so the house or apartment lingers with the smell of apples and cinnamon.

Gives a warm and homey feeling.

One of the best ingredients that makes these baked apples so special is the small amount of browned butter.

As it turns out, there’s such a nice richness to the sauce that’s all over each apple.

In general, when you brown butter, it gives off a nutty kind of flavor to baked goods such as cookies and breads.

Remember,  the next time you bake your favorite chocolate chip cookies, you may want to brown the butter first before adding to the batter.

Well, as you can imagine, the browned butter sure works wonders in this baked apple recipe.

The finished product is so decadent tasting, the tangy cranberries with the nutty butter and apples all complement each other to make a baked apple taste like an apple tart or pie, just without the crust.

Recipe note…for more added decadence, add a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. The warm baked apple and cold ice cream….words really can’t describe how wonderful it tastes.

For those of you that like baked apples cold from the fridge, that’s another way of enjoying these.

They are great for breakfast and you can add a dollop of vanilla Greek yogurt on top.

Maybe sprinkle a little granola too.

Even cottage cheese is great with one of these baked apples. Sometimes I have these with cottage cheese for lunch.

I hope you try this easy recipe out and enjoy the apple goodness.

Here’s what you’ll need to make browned butter baked cranberry apples…

Ingredients:

  • 2 Granny Smith or Rome apples
  • 3 tsp butter
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 1/4 tsp ground cardamom, optional
  • 1/2 to 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 4 1/2 tbsp brown sugar or coconut sugar
  • zest and juice of 1 medium fresh orange, pulp and all
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • tiny pinch sea or kosher salt

Here’s how to make browned butter baked cranberry apples…

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Have a small to medium baking dish ready with 1/4 cup water on the bottom.
  3. Cut 1/2 inch off the top of the apples and set aside. Scoop out the center of each apple.
  4. Melt butter in a non stick pan over medium heat and let it get just a little brown. Add brown sugar and mix until smooth. Add cranberries, cinnamon, cardamom, orange juice, zest, and salt. Cook until cranberries begin to soften and liquid starts to thicken. This should take about 3-5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Place the apples in the baking dish and spoon the mixture into the apples. Save some mixture until you replace the tops. Now spoon the rest over the top of each apple. Some will fall into the water. This will make a delicious sauce when finished.
  6. Cover with foil and bake until tender, about 15-30 minutes depending on the apples. Half way through, take the foil off and spoon some of the sauce over the apples. Keep the foil off and continue to bake until very tender. 10 to 15 minutes more.
