Family Favorite Green Bean Casserole
Here’s my family favorite green bean casserole recipe that I make for every holiday and even for no occasion for a special treat. Simple and so easy to prepare. Enjoy!
I’m sure you all have had some version of the traditional green bean casserole that’s served at most Thanksgiving Day tables.
Of course you have!
My grandma passed her recipe to my mom and my mom passed it to me and my sister. It will stay in the family for more generations to come.
I have changed things up just a little. Sometimes I switch out cream of broccoli soup for the cream of mushroom soup depending on what else is on the menu for that meal.
Also, I use frozen green beans rather than canned. I think it gives the casserole a fresher taste.
You’ll see below in the recipe, there’s an added ingredient you probably already have in your pantry, my family thinks it made all the difference.
So, this is how I make this casserole nowadays and my daughter Tori also made it for her roommates in law school last year for a potluck holiday dinner. She said it was the first thing gone.
Give this a try and enjoy with family and friends for any occasion.
By the way, bring this along to any potluck dinner. It’s sure to be a huge hit.
We had a family potluck dinner at my son Josh’s school and he actually made the casserole this time around. Everyone loved it at the school. In fact, a bunch of people asked for the recipe.
We think it’s a special recipe and I hope you do too. Enjoy!

What you’ll need to make my family favorite green bean casserole…
Ingredients:
- 2 cans cream of mushroom or cream of broccoli soup, don’t add any water or milk
- 2 (16 ounce) bags frozen cut green beans, cooked and drained (this step is important)
- 1 cup milk, I used whole milk
- 2 1/4 tsp soy sauce, I used low sodium (the ingredient that we think makes this casserole taste fabulous)
- 1/4 tsp ground black or white pepper
- 1 1/2 cups French fried onions, the kind in a can or foil bag
- 1/8 tsp turmeric, this is optional
Here’s the simple directions to my family favorite green bean casserole…
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 13 x 9 baking dish (just got this one and love it, not the one in photo) with cooking spray and set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine soup, milk, and, pepper, soy sauce and turmeric if using. Gently stir in the green beans.
- Pour half of the mixture into the prepared baking dish. Gently smooth out. Crunch up about a half cup of the fried onions and sprinkle over the top. Spoon the remaining mixture over and add the rest of the onions on top. This time don’t crunch them up. Spread out evenly.
- Bake for about 30 to 35 minutes. The onions should be brown and crispy. Try not to over bake, you don’t want the onions to burn. The casserole should be heated through when done. Let sit out for about 5 minutes to set then serve up!
Enjoy the deliciousness!
