Have a grill pan ready on your stove. Turn heat on low to heat up the grill for a minute or two. Now, place rinsed and trimmed asparagus in a large mixing bowl, toss with olive oil, garlic, and salt, and pepper if using. Mix with clean hands or tongs to coat all the asparagus. Arrange spears in a single layer on the grill pan. Cook for about 7 to 10 minutes. This will depend of how thick or thin the spears are. After 5 minutes, you can shake the pan or with tongs, turn the spears over. This will give the asparagus the lovey grill marks. Taste one spear after 7 minutes to see if it's tender to your liking.
