New York Egg Cream

Jump to Recipe

This New York egg cream recipe is simple to make and full of the delicious, classic flavors of a classic egg cream. A simple mix of chocolate syrup, whole milk, and club soda is all it takes!

I’m a New York girl. I was born and raised here. There are just some things that you can’t duplicate about this place no matter where you go or how hard anyone tries. From plays and musicals to pizza and cheesecake, there are some things that just can’t be duplicated anywhere else. A classic egg cream is a great example of that. I’ve been drinking this classic sweet treat since I was a young girl, and I think it’s time I shared it with all of you. This recipe is the quintessential New York Egg Cream, so drink up!

New York Egg Cream

This delicious, fizzy classic starts with whole milk and seltzer or club soda. If you want to be fancy, you can use a sparkling bottled water. I combine them with chocolate syrup, and presto! I have a New York egg cream. It’s an incredibly simple drink that’s equal parts fizz and creamy richness with a blast of chocolate, and it’s a staple among New Yorkers.

Origin of the New York Egg Cream

The egg cream is a staple of New York city, and you’ll find it on the menu of every diner in the city and Long Island. The classic New York egg cream is made with U-bet Chocolate syrup, whole milk, and seltzer or club soda. The popular story is that Louis Auster served the first egg creams in the 1890s in his Brooklyn candy shop.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • It’s a true, authentic egg cream.
  • It’s an easy recipe that only takes 3 ingredients to make in less than five minutes.
  • It’s chocolaty and fizzy, and so refreshing.

Ingredients

It only takes a handful of ingredients to make this classic New York drink. Seriously, you only need three ingredients!

  • 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup, the original was made with Fox’s U-Bet Chocolate Syrup, found at some grocery stores or on Amazon. Any chocolate syrup will work. Even sugar free. Here’s where to find Fox’s U-Bet Sugar Free Chocolate Syrup
  • 1/3 cup cold, whole milk, you can use low fat dairy milk or a vegan milk like oat, almond, or soy. But, it’s going to have a different taste. Still delish though.
  • 2/3 cup cold plain, seltzer or club soda

How to Make a New York Egg Cream

Making this drink couldn’t be easier. It only takes three simple steps. That’s it!

Step 1: Mix

Pour the chocolate syrup into a tall glass and add milk. Then, while stirring vigorously with a long spoon or fork, slowly add 1/2 cup of the cold seltzer until fully mixed and frothing.

Step 2: Make the Frothy Top

Pour the remaining 1/2 cup of seltzer over the back of the spoon and into the glass until the foam reaches the top of the glass.

Substitutions and Variations

  • You can use cold seltzer or club soda for this recipe. Sparkling water will be okay but it won’t have as much fizz as seltzer or club soda would make.
  • U-be chocolate syrup is the classic syrup of choice, but any chocolate syrup will do the trick.
  • Whole milk is what makes an original egg cream but, you can always use a non dairy milk or lower fat milk. The tastes will be slightly different though.

Equipment

  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Tall glass
  • Long-handled spoon or fork

Tips

  • Be sure you stir vigorously while mixing in the seltzer. This thoroughly mixes the egg cream and creates all the foamy, fizzy goodness.
  • If possible, use U-bet chocolate syrup. It’s the original!

Storage

This recipe makes one glassful of New York egg cream. You can’t store this drink because it will go flat and the flavor will completely change.
