New York Times Air Fryer Grilled Cheese Sandwich

This easy grilled cheese sandwich starts with two slices of plain white bread, you can use whole wheat bread of choice too, just pick one that’s sturdy! I brush one side of a bread slice with melted butter and the other with mayonnaise. Then, I top it with cheese and add another slice of bread that I spread mayo on again. After that, I just air fry until the bread is golden brown and the inside is melty. That’s it!

Making this sandwich couldn’t be easier. You just spread a little butter and mayo on the bread, top it with cheese, and air fry the whole thing. That’s all there is to it!

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 380 degrees.
  2. Melt the butter in the microwave and brush it on one side of one slice of bread.
  3. Turn the slice over and spread half the mayo on it.
  4. Turn the slice back over, lay it on a piece of oil, and place the cheese on top of it.
  5. Spread the rest of the mayo on the other slice of bread and place it on top of the cheese, mayo side up.
  6. Place the sandwich and foil in the air fryer basket and cook for 4 minutes. Then, flip the sandwich and cook for another 5 minutes. Enjoy!

Substitutions and Variations

  • Use your favorite variety of hearty white bread or wheat bread for this recipe.
  • I used cheddar cheese, but you can use any cheese you like or a combination of cheeses.
  • Try adding cooked bacon or a slice of ham to your sandwich before air frying it.

Tips

  • Don’t be too heavy handed with the butter. You only need a thin layer.
  • A thin layer of mayonnaise is all it takes to make your bread golden and crispy. Don’t lay it on too thick!
  • It’s important to preheat your air fryer for the best results. It’s a myth that air fryers don’t need to be preheated.
  • It’s important to use a sturdy, hearty bread. Thin bread won’t produce the best texture.

Equipment

  • Measuring spoon
  • Air Fryer, recently got this one and love it! I do love this smaller one too. Comes in a few colors.
  • Foil
  • Butter knife
  • Food-grade brush

FAQ

Why does an air fryer make such good grilled cheese sandwiches?

The high heat and circulating air get all sides of the grilled cheese golden and crispy without burning it while also melting the inside to perfection.

Why was my grilled cheese dry?

If you don’t add enough butter and mayo, the bread will dry out while it cooks.

Why was my grilled cheese soggy?

Adding too little butter or may to the bread will result in a dry grilled cheese sandwich. However, going overboard with those fat sources will make for soggy bread that never gets crisp.
