Ingredients

  • 2 tsp yeast
  • 1 1/2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water
  • 3 1/2 cups bread flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp sea or kosher salt
  • 1 egg
  • Trader Joe’s Everything But The Bagel Seasoning or topping of choice such as coarse salt, poppy seeds, sesame seeds, or leave plain

Instructions

  1. 1.In a small bowl, pour ½ cup warm water, yeast and sugar.

2.Allow it to sit, unstirred, for about 5 minutes until it is foamy. Mix together.

3.In a second large bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour the water/yeast mixture.

4.Mix together. If needed, add a small amount of water.

5.Knead for about 10 minutes or until dough is elastic and smooth.

6.Brush with oil and place in a bowl in a warm place. Cover and let rise for 1 hour. Punch the dough and let rise for 10 minutes more.

7.Divide into 8-11 balls, depending how small or large you like your bagels.

8.In the center of the ball make a hole with your thumb.

9.Place on parchment paper or silpat cookie sheet, cover with clean towel and let rest for 10 minutes.

10.Preheat oven to 425 degrees. On the stove, fill a large pot with water and bring to a boil.

11.Drop the bagel into the boiling water and let sit for 1 minute. (For extra chewy bagels, sit for 2 minutes) Flip and repeat on the other side.

12.Place on a heavy rimmed cookie sheet lined with a silpat or parchment paper.

13.Brush the top of the bagels with egg white and sprinkle with seasonings.

    14.Bake for 20 minutes.

15.Remove from oven and let cool enough to hold. Be careful when cutting if the bagels are still hot. You just made homemade bagels!
