A message from Jessica: My big sister (and best friend) was the first to introduce me to a healthier lifestyle, many years ago. I always respected her self-discipline with her diet and visibly watched her become healthier and happier. However, like all lessons my big sister tries to teach me, I had to experience things for myself. It wasn’t until I felt so terribly awful that I decided to take control of my food intolerances to become healthier and happier, too. Even though it took me awhile to fully adopt my new lifestyle, I still enjoyed the healthy things that tasted delicious. As northern New Jersey natives (we don’t all fist pump, I swear!), she kicked off my first foray into a healthy and organic world through a little store called Organico. My sister and I love their Almond Date smoothie. So here is my simpler, dairy free version of this yummy smoothie.
Banana Almond Butter Date Smoothie
Yields: 1 Serving
Fresh From the Market:
- 1/2 Banana (preferably frozen)
- 1 Medjool Date
From the Pantry (or Fridge):
- 1 tbsp. Almond Butter, here is Jessica’s Homemade Almond Butter Recipe, or store bought is just fine
- 1 c. Almond Milk
- 1 c. Ice
From the Spice Rack:
- 1/2 tsp. Ground Cinnamon
- Blender or Food Processor
- If you have tried my banana ice cream recipe, you might be accustomed to keeping sliced bananas in the freezer for quick and easy recipes. If you have the time to slice one up and store half a banana in a ziplock bag or jar in the freezer, then use a frozen banana for more texture.
- Otherwise, half a fresh banana will do!
- You don’t want to throw the date in the blender as is, unless you want to eat the pit! Be sure to pit and chop the date first.
- After measuring each ingredient, throw everything into the blender and blend for a thick, yummy smoothie!
- Please note: this recipe is designed to meet my low, unrefined sugar lifestyle. If you want it to be sweeter or thicker, you can easily use a full banana and/or two dates. The ice is used in place of frozen yogurt to make it a dairy free smoothie and lower in sugar but you can swap the cup of ice for yogurt, if you prefer.
